Sturgeon Bay’s Story
Sturgeon Bay, named Wisconsin's friendliest small town, is the county seat and the only community large enough to qualify as a city on the peninsula. With a population around 9,437 that makes Sturgeon Bay the largest Wisconsin community northeast of Green Bay, home of the incredibly popular Green Bay Packers - the NFL's consummate David-vs-Goliath franchise. Located less than one hour from "Packer Country" and surrounded by the waters of Lake Michigan to the east and the Green Bay to the west, the City of Sturgeon Bay has a rich maritime history that is evident along the city's waterfront and in its museums.
The site had always been a popular area to visit and settle by many Native American tribes, due primarily to the relatively short portage between Lake Michigan and Green Bay. The Menominee, Winnebago, Outagamie, Iroquois, Sauk, Ottawa, Illinois, Chippewa and Potawatomi tribes were all known to have frequented this area. As the first European settlers to Door County planted roots, they chose the Sturgeon Bay area as their center of commerce and government. All areas of the peninsula, from Washington Island in the north to Brussels in the south, converged in the city to conduct official business. This has given the city cultural influences that stem from all parts of the county.
In the early era following those first settlers in 1835, the city's economy was based on a thriving lumbering industry. That changed, however, when the canal linking Green Bay and Lake Michigan opened to shipping in 1881. Ideally situated to handle through traffic, Sturgeon Bay quickly adapted to the changing times and became a premier commercial Midwestern port and shipbuilding center.
Today, Sturgeon Bay has a charming downtown area that is home to unique shops, galleries, fine restaurants, and meticulously restored bed and breakfast inns. Folks are often seen enjoying a stroll through the community's charming downtown with its quaint eateries and small shops. Picturesque lighthouses, fascinating galleries and entertaining theater shows adorn the distinct historic waterfront. Sturgeon Bay's scenic city, county and state parks offer its residents and delighted visitors pristine trails for hiking, biking, skiing or snowmobiling.
Greater Sturgeon Bay includes a fully staffed hospital, two excellent golf courses and a regional airport. Potawatomi State Park, located on the waters of Sturgeon Bay, offers full- and part-time residents and visitors biking and hiking trails and groomed cross-country ski and snowmobile trails. The view from the observation tower overlooking Sawyer Harbor is certain to take your breath away.
So, if your idea of "home turf" includes fishing, you'll love the waters of Sturgeon Bay. Trophy-size catches of walleye, northern pike, lake trout and salmon are the rule, not the exception. Area guides and mentors can put you right over a shipwreck to fish for cantankerous smallmouth bass.
Bottom line is, if it's fun and relaxing and natural you'll probably find it in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.
